Feral Cats
I'm sending this gift in memory of my grandmother, Elizabeth Bennett, of Afton, Wisconsin. She never turned a stray cat or dog away from her door, and I'm sure she would approve of helping you do the good work of helping feral cats. Thanks for all you do.

Ebony
We had a funeral recently for a good friend and companion. There were tears because we will miss him but joy in remembering our days with him.

Ebony joined us 8 years ago. I had received a call from my mother, in Stoughton, saying there was another stay cat. Could we please come get him. He was very friendly and following everyone around. My foot was broken, so I had to wait for my husband to come home to drive me over to get him. By that time one of the neighbors had called the humane society and had him picked up.

The next day all the elderly neighbors were worrying about the cat they had sent to the humane society. Another call from my mother sent us over to the DCHS to put a 3rd hold on him to prevent euthanasia if he wasn’t adopted. After filling out all the papers I said we had better have a look at what we just put a hold on.

I can still see him in my minds eye, curled up in the back of that cage with his back to us. He didn’t even want to look at us and when he did I saw such sadness that I knew he had to go home with us as soon as possible.

When we were finally able to pick him up he had picked up a virus while there and became very sick. We spent weeks doing daily visits to the vet and had him isolated in the guest room unsure if he would pull through or not. That bout left him with kidney problems off and on for the rest of his life, and it was his kidneys that failed in the end.

During those 8 years he was with us he became a central figure in our lives. He helped to raise many foster kittens earning the nickname of Mr Mom. He stopped feline discussions among the others in the household and even convinced a new male that he needed to behave like a gentleman. All by just walking over to them and without a single cross word. One new kitten was so in love with him that she followed him around for 2 years. He also earned the name of “Mr. Kisses” with some volunteers because of his habit of giving lots of kisses, preferably on your lips. He was our official greeter meeting every guest at the door and making them feel welcomed. He loved to sit out in the front yard so that he could run out to the sidewalk to say hello to passing neighbors and to receive some well deserved adoration. Even a few days before he died, thin and tired, he insisted on coming out to greet people coming to our garage sale.We shared so much over the years----including my toothbrush! Even though there are others to warm my lap and heart, Ebony will always have a very special place there and will always be one of my favorite companions.
